Welcome Back! We had a very exciting kickoff to the 2013 school year for The Village School! Monday, September 9th started off smoothly, thanks to parents and teachers working together to make the drop off process as smooth as possible with the revised traffic flow and ongoing construction. Most student faces were filled with anticipation as they reunited with old friends and looked forward to beginning a new adventure this year. New students were warmly greeted by teachers and staff as they joined their classes to meet new friends.
Whether you stuck around catching up with friends and witnessed it first hand or heard about it from your children after that short day, most of you no doubt are aware that we had a very exciting first few moments of school. Right as the elementary and middle school students got ready to start their days and just as the primary and toddler students were arriving, the fire alarm went off due to dust emitted by the construction on the new gymnasium. Though it was a confusing moment, teachers and staff quickly organized the evacuation. Older classes remained calm and followed directions beautifully, setting a wonderful example for our students in the younger programs. In true Montessori fashion, primary teachers took the opportunity as a teaching experience, discussing the construction and the fire alarm process with their young students. Everyone should be proud of how well we reacted as a school.
Later in the week, strong winds and a lightning storm knocked out the school’s phone lines and internet service for the second half of the day. Again, everyone took this inconvenience in their stride and did not let it interrupt the calm flow of their day. We would like to thank parents for being understanding if they had difficulty reaching the school during this time.
Through all this excitement, many parents enjoyed meeting with one another during the morning coffee times held each morning. New families expressed how nice it was to be able to have a place to go and meet other parents and staff during that fluctuating phase in period.
The Welcome Breakfast on Friday morning was also well attended and it was so nice to see so many faces, both returning and new. The new Parent Association board introduced themselves and gave a preview about some of the upcoming events for this year. Volunteering with the PA is a great way to meet new friends and really become involved with what is going on in the school – if you are interested, please fill out a volunteer form.
We are off to a terrific start and look forward to an amazing year. Feel free to stop in the office at any time and say hello.
Here is a preview of this year so far – stay tuned for more photos as the year goes on!
