Spring 2007:
The Village School Receives Volunteer of the Year Award
from Children's Aid and Family Services
The Village School was honored at Children's Aid and Family Services' recent Volunteer Appreciation Evening. The Volunteer of the Year award was given to the school in recognition of their continuing support of CAFS's Baby Basics Program which provides free nutritional formula, diapers, wipes and other supplies to babies of low-income working families.
Service to others is a cornerstone of The Village School's Montessori educational philosophy. At the start of each school year, the students and teachers of every level, from pre-school through middle school, select a community service project of their choice. After learning about Baby Basics five years ago, the elementary students chose to support this program. Since then Elementary teachers, Laura Uzzi and Alina blinds and their students have organized five school wide collections of baby supplies.
As the students were about to start this year's drive, Cori Blake, the Baby Basics Coordinator for CAFS, met with the students. She was greeted by children with much enthusiasm and eagerness to help other families. After speaking about the Baby Basics program, she saw all these little hands in the air. "There were so many questions about how they could help… It was really touching to see such caring children who understood how they can help make a difference in the lives of others," said Blake.
When presenting the award to The Village School, Bob Jones, President and CEO of CAFS praised the school and its students, "The students are invaluable and really help to keep our program going by making supplies available to the families in need. This year, they collected an amazing amount: 53 packs of diapers, 25 cans of formula, and 40 packs of wipes, clothes, baby lotion, powder, wash, shampoo and more. This is the most ever collected by any school or organization." Village School teacher, Laura Uzzi and The Village School's Director of Development and Community Outreach, Mary Pat Boron, accepted the award on behalf of the school.
